Queen [Past]

-:Queen (The Band):-

Queen was a famous rock band that first began in the seventies. The members of the band included Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon. They wrote all their own music and performed it too. They were an instant hit and their first single to go number one was “Bohemian Rhapsody”
Queen II album cover (Rock, M. 1991)

The photo for this album was taken by Mick Rock, who was a famous photographer in the 1970's and was well known for taking pictures of rock stars. This album cover became an iconic picture and was later on re-created for the bands song "Bohieum Rhapsody"

The Queen Crest designed by Freddie Mercury (Mercury, F. 1973)

The lead band member, Freddie Mercury, designed the logo of the band which was used on some of their album covers. The logo was used on their greatest hits album as is used in later publications of the band, such as their 40th anniversary book. Again, like the album cover, the logo is a well-known icon of the band.

The band has 3 number 1 hits; Bohemian Rhapsody, Bohemian Rhapsody (2nd entry) and Innuendo. Not to mention the bands “Greatest Hits” album was named “Best selling record of all time” in the UK. It has sold over 5,407,587 copies according to the Official UK Charts Company. "…but in a way Queen makes sense, they're one of the most exciting bands ever" (Kearns, 2011). The band toured worldwide, having sold out concerts in arenas like Madison Square Garden and Wembley Stadium.

A ticket stub from their sold out show at Madison Square Garden, 1978. (Scully, 1978)

The sales of the music, as well as the sold out shows and popular culture imagery shows that the band was very popular when they were around. They toured world wise, showing that they were in high demand. Their pictures and imagery have been parodied and used in merchandise, plus not to mention they made great music. I think I’ll have to talk about what the band did after the death of the lead singer , Freddie Mercury, as it greatly affect the whole world.

"…And it was Freddie who remained the driving force behind a band which amassed a £100million fortune. (Unknown, 1991)

-:Freddie Mercury Statue:-

Freddie Mercury Statue (Brace, J. 2011)

The three remaining members of the band Queen, along with other family member and friends, commissioned this statue to be made by sculptor Irena Sedlecka. It was set in Montreux, Switzerland in 1996 and has been there ever since.

As you can see, people still leave flowers and cards in remembrance of the singer. The pose is an iconic one of Freddie's and he's wearing his famous yellow jacket from the Wembley Stadium performance. I think the statue is a lovely tribute to the singer.

-:Freddie Mercury Tribute:-
Rating on the "Freddie Mercury Tribute" video on IMDB on 29/11/2011 (IMDB, 2011)

A year after the singers death on the 20th April, 1992, some of the greatest musicians in the world got together to perform in one concert. It was held at Wembley Stadium and 72,000 people attended. The show was also broadcasted live to 76 different countries around the world.

All the money raised from the sale of the event, the video tapes and other merchandise was all put towards the Mercury Phoenix Trust.

The logo of the charity created in memory of Freddie Mercury (Mercury Phoenix Trust Ltd. 2009)

The trust was set up soon after Mercury’s death. They help raise money and give it to help fund charities. The aim of the trust is to “fighting aids worldwide” (stated on the website). The phoenix imagery was actually lifted from the Queen logo with Freddie designed himself, linking to both the band of Queen and Freddie Mercury.

I think this is a fantastic was to remember the singer Freddie Mercury and a brilliant way to help with a well-known cause. The website shows that they are doing some wonderful work and the original concert from 1992 raised thousands of pounds. I never thought I’d find a charity in my research.

-:Queen Elizabeth I:-

Portraits of Queen Elizabeth I: The Middle Years (Hilliard, N. 1573-1587)
Queen Elizabeth I was born on 7 September 1533. She became Queen of England in 1558. She was captured in many portraits during her life.

Portraits of Queen Elizabeth I: The Final Years (1588-1603) (Gower, G. 1588)

Portraits of Queen Elizabeth I: The Final Years (1588-1603) (Hilliard, 1595-1600)

The main reason Elizabeth I is so popular is that she was Queen of England for 40 years; another reason is for her accomplishments. She was a very good Queen and achieved a lot during her time on the throne. “Elizabeth was a different kind of Queen: quick-witted, clever and able to use feminine wiles to get her own way. Elizabeth could be as ruthless and calculating as any king before her but at the same time she was vain, sentimental and easily swayed by flattery.” (Briscoe, A. 2011) She set up the “English Protestant Church”, she was famous for being a virgin, she was in reign during the Spanish Armada in 1588 which is seen as England’s greatest victory to date and she was Queen during a time of the growth of art and literacy. Also se was the first female Queen we had on the throne at a time were men were seen as being inferior to woman. “It is more than a monster in nature that a woman should reign and bear empire over man.” (Knox, J. 2011)

After reading her summary of what she had gained during her time as Queen I believe that Knox is wrong. Of course he wrote this before she was officially crowned but she was a well-loved Queen and did England proud. Why else would her time on the throne be referenced to as the Golden Age.

-:Elizabeth book:-
The front cover of a book all about Elizabeth I (Starkey, D. 2001)

"On one level it is the history of a nation but on a more immediate level it is the story of a an extraordinary woman trying to make her way through desperately hard times and for the most part emerging victorious" (Braniff, J. 2001)

"This habit of knowing what company to keep served her well through her long life as one of the greatest queens England has ever known." (Thomas, K. 2002)

"This book is superb. It is written as a catalogue and as such would not expect it to be very exciting." (Farquharson, B. 2003)

"Quite frankly, I don't see how this book can possibly be sold as 'The best account in English of the early years of Elizabeth.'" (Crisp, L. 2010)

A screen-shot of the reviews collected on the book Elizabeth taken 30/11/2011 (Amazon, 2011)

The book is a history of Queen Elizabeth I, from her early days to her death. A historian called Dr.David Starkey who has written lots of other history books wrote it.
I think the reviews and the ratings speak for themselves on this item. Even though the book did get a few bad reviews overall it was very well received and popular. This proves that people want to read more about Queen Elizabeth, she is interesting and people want to learn more about this past Queen.

-:"Elizabeth", 1998 film:-

The rating on the film "Elizabeth" on the 30/11/2011 (IMDB, 2011)

"This is a history film made at its very finest and the equal of A Man For All Seasons. Elizabeth could have unfolded in front of me all day and I would have remained enraptured." (Walsh, B. 1998)

"It is one of the finest historical dramas to have appeared in decades." (Thompson, E. 2001)

A photograph of the film "Elizabeth" being filmed (Polygram Film Entertainment, 1998)

The film was directed by Shekhar Kapur and was written by Michael. It is classed as a Biography/Drama/History film. “A film of the early years of the reign of Elizabeth I of England and her difficult task of learning what is necessary to be a monarch.” (IMDB, no date) On IMDB.com the film has a rating of 7.6 (n the date 30/11/2011) and has a good mixture of reviews. The movie won an Oscar for best make-up and was nominated for 6 others. It won another 30 awards including 4 BAFTA’s, a Critics Choice Award and a Golden Globe. It has estimate to have cost $25,000,000 to make but grossed an amazing $34,000,000.
All the awards it won, the reviews it has gained and the gross income it made I think proves that the film was popular and well received. With the making of it it showed that producers though that the film would do well and make money and it did. This all proves that a film about Queen Elizabeth I was popular.

All three ships have been named after Royalty and where all battleships used during Wars. Each were giant ships and where used by the English in Wars through-out the years. The RMS stands for Her Royal Majesties Service.

It's very interesting to see that so many ships where named after different Queens through out time. It might be due to the ships wanting to keep British. Naming it after a Royal Queen will keep it's English heritage. Also the names have a very regal sound to them, due to them being Queens names.  I think that it also has to do with the fact that they are British ships. To show their English pride they named it after a successful and well known Queen that improved England. it seems to be a common thing to name ships after Queen and these are just a few examples that I found.

-:Pub Signs:-
A collection of images collected using Google Images (Google, 2011)

Pubs have always been a stable of England, there isn't a town you can go to without there being a pub. Pubs have been around for many centuries now and have become in some way a symbol of England and our culture. it would only seem fitting to have a pub named after the Queen or King that was resigning over England at the time or a different Queen from history.

Many pubs seems to have many different names and images but they all relate to Queens from Royalty. The Queens head seems to be a popular name for the pub. It needs to be something catchy so you can't really have just "Queen". Pubs don't really link to Queens at all, they're both very well known things about England though. Plus giving the pub a Queens name would make it feel more British. Also the imagery would catch your eye straight away at portraits of Queens are very recognisable. I found this out when doing both this past research and present research on this. This is due to the fact that Queens have been printed on coins, notes and stamps which are used by everyone in the country so everyone is seeing them. Everyone has seen these portraits of Queens so you instantly know who it is.

I've discovered quite a bit about my past research. For one I didn't realise how well known imagery of older Queens was. Due to the circulation of money and famous portraits the imagery of any Queen is powerful, striking and stunning. Just using the image of a Queen alone would probably increase the popularity of something. Plus if you marketed it, it would probably add a sudden sense of regal and royalty to it. It would make it seem high market. For my horizon research I'm going to use both my past and present research and look into how these will develop into the future and if it actually has a future.

Queen [Present]

-:Queen of England:-

Using the mind map I created I thought I would first look into the Royal Family. It was the first thing I through then I was first given the word.

'The Firm': British royal family (Lawless, J. 2011)

This is the Royal Family in England today. They’re a very iconic family and are known world-wide. The Queen of England is also the Head of State in 15 other Commonwealth countries such as Canada and Australia. Queen Elizabeth was born in 1926 and is the eldest daughter of the famous King George VI. She was crowned the Queen of England at the age of 25 and has reigned for over 50 years. She married Prince Philip (the Duke of Edinburgh) and had 4 children (Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Edward and Prince Andrew). She also now has 8 grandchildren; Peter and Zara Philips, Prince William and Prince Harry, Princess Beatrice and Princes Eugenie and Lady Louise and Viscount.

The Queen’s image is used in lots of media today, such as money and stamps.

British currency (Chapmen, A. 2008)

The designs on the back of each coin made a "Sheild image" (Chapmen, A. 2008)

With the Queen being on all our money it's a media that everyone has. Her portrait has become very known due to he rbeing printed on our money (as well as stamps)

The Queen is also printed on other things too such as stamps. This stamps are used by the Royal Mail. Depending on what your sending and on how quickly you want it there you pick the stamp you would need.

-:Movie: "The Queen":-
The Queen movie (Frears, S. 2006)

The Queen was released in cinemas in 2006 and was directed by Stephen Frears. The movie tells of the story of how the Queen coped with the death or Princess Diana. It shows her struggle and a series of events through this difficult time.

"Mirren is the key to it all in a performance sure to be nominated for an Oscar. She finds a way, even in a "behind the scenes" docudrama, to suggest that part of her character will always be behind the scenes. What a masterful performance, built on suggestion, implication and understatement" (Ebert, R. 2006)

Ebert was right, the film not only thanks to Helen Mirren (playing the Queen) was awarding winning but the film overall was recieved very well by everyone! The film won several awads including; Two BAFTA's, BMI, BSFC Award, British Independent Film Award an Oscar and many more. It was also nominated for several more awards.

"HRH Elizabeth was reported to be 'amused' by it, which is nice, except that strictly speaking, it's not a comedy..." (Papamichael, S. 2007)

I found this qoute quite funny to read. I didn't really think that the Queen herself would actually watch a film about herself. I guess she would though and i'm glad to hear that she liked it so much. I saw the film too shortly after it's DVD release and thought it was a great and gripping film. Most of us still remember the time when Princess Diana died so we can all relate to this event and the film. It's so interesting to see the Queen in a sort of "behind the scenes", she seems more like a person than a Queen.

-:Declining interest in the Royal Family:-
Coming soon...

-:Royal Wedding:-
If you ask anyone about the Royal Family and what they've done this year I bet 9/10 people will mention the Royal Wedding. The Royal Wedding was between Prince William (the Queens grandson) and Kate Middleton on Friday 29th April.
(AP, 2011)

"Catherine looked wonderfully elegant, and we were honoured to be part of such a special, historical day for our country." (Beckham, D. 2011)

I personally watched the event with my older sister, her boyfriend and my mum. I thought it was a great event and really brought all the country together. I had a great time watching it, it was like watching a fairytale take place. It was unreal and very beautiful. I know some of my friends refused to watch but I actually enjoyed watching it.

The wedding was covered on the TV by the BBC. Over 34 million viewers watched the wedding. The wedding was also broadcasted on ITV, BBC iPlayer and the radio. As it was a Royal occasion many people got the day off to watch the event.

"Police estimate a million people lined the wedding procession route from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace on Friday." (BBC, 2011)

Millions of people turned out on the streets near the church and the palace just to get a glimse of the new couple. People from all over the world even came just to the special event. As such there is a lot of merchendies which was sold at the time to celebrate the couples wedding. These included mugs, plates, tea towels, books, DVDs, pictures, anything you could really think of. If there was something they could slap them on, they would. One company even sold Royal condoms.

 Royal Condoms ( Murano, G. 2011)

"Now there's a way to commemorate the royal wedding and keep your crown jewels safe at the same time. British manufacturer Crown Jewels Condoms of Distinction launched their royal wedding collector's edition condoms to celebrate the April 29 marriage of Kate Middleton and Prince William. Along with the special condoms, the box comes with a pastel souvenir portrait of what the couple might look like on their wedding day." -(Murano, G. 2011)

I honestly wouldn't buy these myself if I needed condoms. I honestly don't really get why the company had started to sell these but I guess someone must have bought them.

The article I found these on had a list of bizarre merchandise which had been created for the Royal Wedding in mind. Some of the things included a toilet seat, a fridge and a sick bag.

Royal Lego wedding recreation ( Getty, 2011)

I just had to include this image of the Royal Wedding re-created in Lego. This was set up at LegoLand Windsor on the 1st April, almost a month before the actual ceremony. The amount of detail is intense, with Kate having her gloves and veil to celebrity Lego guest.

"The fine folks at Legoland built the entire "Royal Wedding" from Buckingham Palace to Kate Middleton's gown (and gloves) to guests including pregnant Victoria Beckham, Elton John and Sir Paul McCartney. "-(Zahm, G. 2011)

I've always loved Lego ever since I was a child. I think that love for it meant I had to add it into the research. Lego is a well known toy though and has been popular for several years, even having it's own theme parks around the world. I think this re-creation at the Windsor Legoland was both brilliant and ironic (as it's close to where the Royal Family live and where the wedding was held) I think it shows though that not only was the Royal Wedding replicated into several merchandise items, it was also re-created in different medias. It shows that it was a popular topic at the time and was used to get people to come to LegoLand.

This is a TV commercial which was created by the mobile company T-Mobile. They have had a history of making iconic and well known viral adverts to catch peoples attention. This one they uploaded to Youtube on the 15th April. It's had over 24 million views since then.
The advert shows a spoof of what the wedding could be like. They got look-a-likes to play the Royal members as they all dance down the aile for Kate and William's wedding.

The T-Mobile Royal Wedding commercial (lifeisforsharing, 2011)

It's a very fun and eye catching advert. I remember watching for the first time with my mum while we were watching TV and I remember us both laughing about it. It was very rememurable and we talked about it for a long time afterwards, proving it was a very good advert
Many companies at the time I think tried to use the Royal Wedding as a way to get more buisness and more money, it was a very popular event as it's not every day that there is a Royal Wedding.

The event was watched all over the world, and with figures like this proves that Royal event and the Royal Family are still popular. I suppose this proves that maybe the Queen as a single person isn't as popular as the family on a whole. Maybe my reserach will have to branch of into Royal Families and other members such as Kings, Princess and Princes.

I found these Yankee candles on a eBay auction. They were sold after 14 bids for £12.65. They are a set of limited edition candles which the company "Yankee Candles" had created. They are a set of 9 candles for the Royal Wedding.
Not a lot of money but with 14 bids it proves that the item was popular and was in demand from the 14 bidders.

(eBay seller paulgail00906b4p7 2011)

"Yankee Candle Wedding Day The Royal Wedding Day Sampler Collection BNIB".

While on eBay I decided to have a lok for more items with the word "Queen" in. I found a few online auctions which were very popular. I first found a set of candle sticks. This auction gained 14 bids and sold in the end for £12.65 (an extra £2.85 for post and package)

(eBay seller mortonv73, 2011)
"Original Antique The Queen of Diamonds brass candlesticks".
They are a pair of Vicotiran candlesticks (so made in around 1850-1899). The item got a whopping 32 bids and sold for the grand price of £74 ,with an extra £6.50 for post and package.

 (eBay seller gowergem, 2011)
"Solid Sterling Silver Queens Pattern Fish Eaters Hallmarked Sheffield 1931"
As the title of the item says, it's a set of 10 knives and forks. They're pure silver and we're produced in 1931. The item in the end recieved 18 bids and sold for a massive £112, with only £4.25 for the post and package.

(eBay seller granpip7, 2011)
"Superb 18th C Chinese Porcelain Fluted 'Eurpean Queen' Teabowl and Saucer" is the title of the item. This item is a matching tea bowl and saucer which originated from China and was created in "QIANLONG 18TH CENTURY" (granpip7, 2011). It gained a total of 13 bids and sold for £103.99 with £4.00 for post and package.

(eBay seller leehickling, 2011)
"VICTORIAN Silver MUFFINEER - London 1853 - Queen Anne style"
This item is an old Muffineer, which is kind of an old salt shaker. You can put other herbs or spices in it too. This item gained a massive 17 bids and was finally sold for £77.00 (£.50 for the post and package).

All these eBay auctions prove that these items were very popular as they all had lots of bids and sold for quite a bit. I don't think it proves that the Queen herself is poplluar but these old Victorian items that have a link to Royality and Queens are popular.  Ithink my research might end up expanding into other different queens other than the Queen of England herself. I think I'll expand the research into Royality as a whole family rather than just one member as I think this area will prove to be more popular.

-:Queen (The Band):-

40 Years Of Queen Book (Outside Line, 2011)

"40 Years of Queen" is an official publication, and has been approved at every stage by the band. It shows and tells the story of a fantastically talented and popular group of musicians who have retained an enormous fanbase throughout their entire history. The book showcases the band, its members, recordings and concerts through images and the written word, as well as through the unique pieces of memorabilia that are from the private collections of Queen's members." -(Queen official website, 2011)

A book released celebrating 40 years of Queen. New never before seen images and other stuff was given out with the book. The band originally formed 40 years ago but they're still very popular today.
The publishing of the book proves that the bands strong popularity still sells even if the band isn't together anymore or producing new songs.

-:"We will rock you!" (Stage musical):-

We will rock you poster (Millington, P. 2011)

“Everywhere, the kids watch the same movies, wear the same fashions and think the same thoughts. It’s a safe, happy, Ga Ga world. Unless you’re a rebel. Unless you want to Rock. On Planet Mall all the musical instruments are banned. The Company Computers generate tunes and everybody downloads them. It is an age of Boy Bands and of Girl Bands. Of Boy and Girl Bands. Of Girl Bands with a couple of boys in them that look like girls anyway. Nothing is left to chance, hits are scheduled years in advance.” (Queen Theatrical Productions, 2011)

The show was first released in 2002 and has been running ever since. It has songs that are well known from the band Queen. It has taken these songs and created a story line for them, so in other words turning rock songs into a musical  The show has even won awards, including the BB2 radio Oliver Audience award.

"Thank you to the tremendous talent that has come through our door and kept us rocking throughout the years." (May, B 2011)

The show is still running now and has performances every night. They even sell merchandise, such as clothing, key rings, books etc. that people can buy to remember the time they had at the musical.

Collection of merchandise (Universal Music Group, 2011)

As you can see there is a variety of merchandise available for people to buy. They can access this from the official website and probably buy them after the show if they go to see it. Some of the items make sense like t-shirts and key-rings but I never expected to see a teddy bear for sale or drumsticks. I guess it proves that the show is both for adults and kids, as well as the show if very popular so they're able to whack the logo on anything and be able to sell it. I guess all this proves that the band Queen are still very popular today and are well loved.

-:"Lego" Freddie Mercury:-
A tribute to Freddie Mercury made with Lego (Heath, I. 2011)
The singer of the band, Freddie Mercury, unfortunately died 20 years ago on the 24th November 1991. As a tribute to him a man called Iain Heath created this Lego recreation of the idol. “I wanted to create a model that captured Freddie's energy and joy. And Queen's concert at Wembley Stadium in the summer of 1986 (one of Freddie's final performances with Queen) seemed like the perfect source material.” (Heath, I. 2011)

The man has indeed become a very famous icon and his imagery is known worldwide. He still is very well remembered today, even though he died 20 years ago. There are many tributes to him as well as charities and awards set up in his name.

-:Queen "costumes":-
Freddie Mercury Break Free costume (Unknown, no date)

Freddie Mercury Wembley Costume (Unknown, no date)

Here are some fancy dress costumes you can buy. Want to be Freddie Mercury for Halloween or a fancy dress party? Well now you can. There are two versions I found; his woman version from the "I want to break free" video and his famous yellow jacket one from his Wembley Stadium concert.
I have to admit the woman one really made me laugh. You would recognise these costumes straight away if I saw someone wearing them. Also the selling of them means that they are very popular and recognisable.

Queen [Horizon]

For the horizon post of "Queen" I will be looking into anything that is coming out in the next 2-5 years to do with Queen or anything partially relating to it. I am hoping this will be a wide range of media, just like in both my present and past posts. I think this will throw up a variety of different things as my previous posts don’t really have much of a continuation, there’s always been something different and it’s offered a real variety.

-:Mirror Mirror:-
Mirror Mirror: The Untold Adventures of Snow White (Thijs, J. 2011)

"A reimagining of the classic fairy tale starring Oscar winner Julia Roberts as the Queen, Lily Collins as Snow White, Armie Hammer as Prince Alcott, Sean Bean as the King and Nathan Lane as the Queen's hapless and bungling servant, Brighton. An evil queen steals control of a kingdom and an exiled princess enlists the help of seven resourceful rebels to win back her birthright." (relativitymediallc.com, 2011)

Mirror, Mirror Official trailer (aaspri, 2011)

The film is in post-production at the moment, meaning it has all been filmed and it now in the final stages before its release. The trailer was released on the 15th November 2011. On YouTube it unfortunately hasn't done so popular, with only 60,000 views and a majority of dislikes (as of 22/11/2011) I don't think this movie will do so well.

The "Mirror Mirror" trailer stats on Youtube on 09/11/2011 (aaspri, 2011)

The trailer seems to show that this is more of a comedy/fantasy genre to it which may be why it's not so liked. The comedy to me seemed to be a little stale and not really that funny. I personally don't think I'll go see this film as it seems to be aimed at a younger audience

The one thing I noticed about the trailer though it that the costumes are very extravagant and colourful. The Queen in the movie has lots of different outfits which are flamboyant to say at the least.

Photos of the Queen of the movie (Thijs, J. 2011)

The dresses have a very Victorian feel to them which could link to when the story was first created. It also might link to the fact that Victorian dresses are always seen as being "regal" and "royal". The colours and patterns are both very bold. If you first see these images without knowing what they are I bet the person looking at them would know it was a Queen.

-:Snow White and the Huntsman:-
Snow White and the Huntsman poster (Universal Studios, 2011)
"Synopsis: Snow White, a princess, escapes her evil stepmother with the help of a huntsman who was supposed to kill her but instead trains the princess to fight back." (Unknown, 2011)

The film is now in post-production, which means it's all been filmed and they are now editing it. I found this film while doing the research on the "Mirror Mirror" film. It's odd that both films seem to be out at around the same time, they're both very different in contrast though. "Mirror Mirror" is described as a "Comedy | Drama | Fantasy" (IMDB, 2011) where as "Snow White and the Huntsman" is described as a "Action | Adventure | Drama" (IMDB, 2011).

Snow White and the Huntsman - Teaser Trailer (SnowWhiteHuntsman, 2011)

The official "Snow White and the Hunstman" trailer stats on Youtube on 11/11/2011 (SnowWhiteHuntsman. 2011)
As you can see the rating are a lot higher for Snow White and the Huntsman than Mirror Mirror. This may be due to a few factors though, such as this trailer coming out earlier than the Mirror Mirror trailer. Also this trailer was posted on the film studio's official YouTube account were as I couldn't find an official YouTube channel for the other film.  Also an influence of actors may be to blame or the look of the films too.

Snow White VS Mirror Mirror (Blasingame, L. 2011)

Snow White: Who's The Fairest Of Them All? (Parvini, S. 2011)

Here are some good images showing the comparison between the two main characters of each film, Snow White and the Evil Queen. As you can see Mirror Mirror is a very colour and has a vibrant look to it, its very fairy-tale and childlike. Snow White and the Huntsman on the other hand it has a palette of tones and has more of a darker theme to it. Both characters share similarities of course, such as Snow White's black hair.

Still, I think the stats speak for themselves and prove that this film is much more liked and anticipated then "Mirror Mirror". This may be due to the genre or the new twist on Snow White. Here she is a warrior, a strong and independent character. Were as in Mirror Mirror she's very much a princess who can't do much for herself. I personally would go see Snow White and the Huntsman myself, as it looks a lot more engaging and the trailer makes you want to see more. It really grabs your interests with the overall look and quality of the trailer.
-:Brave:-
Brave Poster (Disney, Pixar. 2011)

Brave is the new movie by Pixar and Disney. As of this point, October 2011, there has only been the release of a teaser trailer and very little images of the movie. Not a lot is known as of yet. The trailer seems to depict a young girl who is riding a horse with a bow and arrow and shows of the land that she must live in.
 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As of November 2011 we have had more information about the film. Disney has been very kind and a trailer has now been released showing more about the character and the movie itself. As well as more screen-caps of the film and more information being released, thanks Disney.

 Brave Trailer (DisneyPixar, 2011)

The trailer was published onto YouTube on the 16th November, a week later and it has over 2 million views! They also have a very positive response to it, with over 12,000 likes on the video.

The official "Brave" trailer stats on Youtube on 22/11/2011 (DisneyPixar, 2011)

"Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus and Queen Elinor. Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin, surly Lord Macintosh and cantankerous Lord Dingwall. Merida's actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Witch for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it's too late." (Walt Disney/Pixar, 2011)

The reason I have included it is because it is Royal family based so there is a Queen in it. The movie looks visual brilliant, CGI has never been better. I personally love all the landscapes shots. The characters look very interesting and I can't wait to see the movie.

-:Welfare Queen:-

I did find out about a new film called Welfare Queen but unfortunately I was unable to find any images or information about it at all. It would have been great to have some information about it here but unfortunately, after many hours of searching, I found nothing.

-:Four Kings:-
"An historical epic which is set against the French and Indian War. Col. Lord Francis Nicholson, a wealthy Brit self-finances the war in hopes of creating an utopian society along with his noble wife, muse and confidante, Lady Gwenievieve Nicholson, who shares her husband's sense of higher calling and aims to build a better life in the New World." (deadline.com, 2011)

Another film that’s coming out which has royalty in the title of the film. Again though there is very little known about it. It's in pre-production so this means that they haven't film anything as of yet. The quote I found though sounds very interesting and I can't wait to see what it will be like.
-:Queen's Speech:-

The Queen's Christmas speech this year will be broadcast, for the first time, on Sky.

"This year's Queen's Christmas message could have an added dimension after production duties were handed to Sky News for the first time. A third dimension, to be specific, with a 3D Commonwealth address by her majesty the ultimate marketing coup for the satellite broadcaster." (Plunkett, J. 2011)

This will be the first time that the Queens speech will have been broadcast, not only on another channel, but maybe in 3D.

"Sky News has been given the rights to produce the Queen's Speech, alongside the BBC and ITN. It will be produced by all three companies in 2011 and 2012, which brings in the distinct possibility that the whole thing will be shot in 3D by Sky. While this isn't set in stone, a spokesperson for Sky contacted the Guardian and said the company was "exploring the opportunity" of using 3D technology for the speech." (Chacksfield, M. 2011)

This is still just a rumour at the moment; I was unable to find ay confirmation of the news about this rumour. This is still great news for the Queen though as it means more people will be able to watch her speech. This should hopefully mean more viewers for the speech, if in 3D the amount of people might either increase or decrease. People might be more interested to see the Queens Speech in 3D but not everyone is able to access 3D as of yet on their TV. I found this quote about the Royal Wedding being filmed in 3D.
"A St James's Palace spokeswoman said: "After careful consideration we have decided not to progress with 3D coverage of the service on this occasion. There are a number of reasons for this, most notably the additional camera footprint in the abbey." While Tuesday's decision rules out 3D coverage of the service in Westminster Abbey, it remains to be seen whether Sky will attempt to incorporate some kind of 3D coverage into other elements of the couple's big day." (Plunkett, J. 2011)

This information could either rule out 3D for the Queens speech or not. In the end we won't really know until closer to the time. The quote above shows that it was ruled out for the wedding but as the Queens speech is normally filmed in the Queen's office with just her it might be do-able. The pure fact that the Queens Speech will be broadcasted on an extra channel though means that it will be more accessible for people to watch on Christmas day so that fact alone should increase the popularity of the Queen.
-:Olympic Ambassadors:-
"The Duchess of Cambridge has taken on her first working role as a member of the Royal Family by becoming an official   ambassador for the London Olympics.
Kate, her husband Prince William and her brother-in-law Prince Harry will represent Team GB and Paralympics GB before and during the 2012 Games.
‘The Duchess has always been a keen sportswoman and is, like everyone, greatly looking forward to the Olympics being held in this country,’ said an aide." (Whitelock, S. 2011)

It has recently been announced that Prince William and Duchess Kate will be ambassadors of the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

"Olympic ambassadors are chosen to encourage and inspire the public to get behind the Olympics. With Prince William and Kate’s popularity, I’m sure that they will be able to do an outstanding job with this." (Unknown, 2011)

I think the Olympics made a wise choice in choosing the couple to be ambassadors. After the success and popularity of their televised wedding in April (covered in my present research) they are still seen as a public interest and are very generally liked by the public. This will not only increase the popularity of the new couple but I think the Royal Family in general.

-:The Queen's Diamond Jubilee:-
An image found on the Diamond Jubilee website (Unknown, 2011)

"To mark 60 years of the Queen’s reign the Diamond Jubilee will take place in 2012.  A special Diamond Jubilee weekend will be held between 2 – 5 June 2012.  The four day Jubilee Bank Holiday will provide an opportunity for people and communities across the nation to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s 60 year reign." (Unknown, 2011)

Next year will mark the 60th year that the Queen has reigned over England. The only other Queen to have done this was Queen Victoria over 200 years ago.

"The Queen came to the throne on 6 February 1952 and her Coronation took place on 2 June 1953. The Queen celebrated her Silver Jubilee (25 years) in 1977 and her Golden Jubilee (50 years) in 2002. The only other British monarch to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee was Queen Victoria in 1897." (Unknown, 2011)

To mark this special year that the Queen has been in power there will be several events, as well as bank holidays. The "Direct.gov" website has a full list of days off and information for the Diamond Jubilee celebration.

"Big Jubilee Lunches.
A River Pageant on the Thames.
A concert at Buckingham Palace.
The lighting of 2012 beacons throughout the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth."
(Direct.Gov. 2011)

"There will be a special bank holiday for the Diamond Jubilee. The 2012 late May bank holiday will be moved to Monday 4 June 2012 and an additional Jubilee bank holiday will be on Tuesday 5 June 2012." (Direct.Gov. 2011)

With the celebration of this next year I think this will throw the Royal Family back into the public eye. The celebrations of the Diamond Jubilee will affect everyone in the UK with the change of the Bank Holiday. I think this will be a great celebration though and I think everyone will enjoy it. This will defiantly increase the popularity of the Queen, who doesn't like celebrations?

-:Coins:-
A series of new coins released throughout 2010 to 2012 (Alexander, M. 2010)

"The current gold series: CITIUS – Faster Three-Coin Set includes a £100 coin containing one full ounce of fine gold and two £25 coins containing one-quarter ounce of fine gold, all struck to Proof quality. Three Olympic sports – Sailing, Cycling and Running – are featured on the coins, each paired with a Roman god – Neptune, Diana and Mercury. The designs were created by the British sculptor John Bergdahl." (Alexander, M 2010)

The first set of coins was released in 2010 but each one will be released in both 2011 and 2012.

"This is the first of a three year series of three coins, the next set will be issued in 2011 and the last in 2012, the year which London will host the Olympic games." (Alexander, M 2010)

One of the coins from the "2012 Premium Proof Set" (The Royal Mint Limited. 2011)

One of the coins from the "2012 Premium Proof Set" (The Royal Mint Limited. 2011)

These coins unfortunately won't be in the currency circulation but more of a collector’s item. The coin above it priced at £99 and the set contains 11 coins.

The coins look very pretty, the designs are appealing, modern and they link to their subject so you know what they are promoting. I like that the Olympic coin has Roman Gods on it and a motto that links. The selling of these limited edition coins for such a high price though show that there is a market for them and past items that are similar have sold before. It means they're popular and people are willing to spend a lot to have them in their collection.  I personally love the designs and feel that they are a very good representation of the even that they are promoting an well as documenting.

Overall the research I have done I think gives a good scope on the range of different media’s to do with the word “Queen”. There is such a variety here and I think this will prove very helpful in both my Forecast and IP justification. This has proved to be very helpful.
